Thoughts from a project life newb.

Starting Project Life has been an interesting journey. I remember being completely immersed in the idea of documenting everyday life by putting things in small pockets and making it all pretty. I had supplies gathered and told myself I would not buy anything special or add to my stash. I wouldn’t make a mess and I would keep it simple.
Then came January and I was like what the !@*& do I do with all this stuff I’ve collected? I wasn’t into what I had done at all but I wasn’t going to quit right off the bat. I like the idea of Project Life. It’s quite genius really. I thought that maybe I was the one that was making this much more complicated than it is. I can’t be the only one bogged down by this. I know I’m not actually. I know it sits on your desk, taunting you like mine does. Mine actually straight up bullies me. But after a good conversation with Jamaica about my PL woes, I knew that I had to just do it. (That’s so damn cliche but true) You have to just dig in, start where ever you feel comfortable starting and make that PL your…you know what. Because really this thing, this beast of a scrapbook is going to be so worth it in the end. It really is. I can see having a collection of these and looking back 10 years from now. That makes it worth it.

So here a few random thoughts from a Project Life newb.

*You have to stay somewhat organized. I’m trying, I really am. I know that I want to keep specific PL things like 3×4 cards and date stamps in it’s own area. I had purchased a big box to keep my album in but that idea quickly got out of hand.

*I’m starting to date photos after editing them. Also dating other items with post it notes. This has helped a lot. I found a big reason for not staying current is because I would forget dates and specifics.

*I also keep a desk calendar and write down a list of events. I also make note of any photos I’d taken.

*For me, having photos already printed is key. I scrap in my dining room and I have to bring my printer in from the garage, find an uncovered surface and plot out photos so I can get the most out expensive photograph paper. Half the time, I’m out of ink. So now I just do a big run at Costco. I get most everything printed on 4×6 sheets, even instagrams. I’m cheap, they’re cheap. It’s a win win for all.

*I’ve paired down the papers I want to use quite a bit. At first, I went through my whole paper stash and grabbed every paper from the last 5 years that I liked. Bad decision. I know I like neutrals, grays especially. The new Classic Calico and Take Note line from Studio Calico is my go to right now.

*I can take up to a dozen photos easily in a day. I tried to fit all of these photos in but I just can’t. Then all my pages would be just photos and I didn’t like that. So now I choose one specific photo that I thought summed up that day or if I didn’t like the photo at all, I nixed it.

*Keeping it as simple as possible is the only way for me. I cannot be bogged down with too many choices. Here are the things that I’m keeping by my PL album.

Washi tape is a must/Smash date stamp/favorite letter stamps/SC journaling spots/Thickers/Hello Forever speech bubbles/post its/letterpress from jed/
Digital items I love for PL are Splendid Fiins 4×6 Halvsies + I just printed off a bunch of Paislee Press cards to have on hand.

And now for my PL pages so far. As you can see, there’s still some bare spots and January is pretty much a fail but I’m going to try and salvage it.

Pretty much caught up. I want to make it a goal to not get too far behind like I did in the beginning. I also want to enjoy the process, not be bullied into it.

Happy weekend.

Geralyn - I’m so glad you’re sharing your Project Life, Tina :) I really like it! It seems very true to your style. Love seeing your workspace as well as your pages!

Neelu - PL is something I want to do.. But somehow I just don’t get the courage :(

vee - it looks awesome girl! I agree to it is totally worth the time!

Maria - I really like it, Tina. The talent shows even if you don’t feel it. It’s there.

Only thing… why judge your progress with “fail”, “better”… no need to be hard on yourself. Why not be truly grateful to have been able to do it?

Mary Jo - You are making me really anxious to start!
I chose May as my starting date because that is when my husband starts a three year, out of town, home on weekends job :-O

I seriously think PL will be good for us to have and him to see on the weekends :)

I think your PL looks amazing!

Elizabeth Rosemond - Good for you for not giving up! I got REALLY overwhelmed last year and gave up. This year, I changed my attitude and got busy. GO!

Zorina - Awesome! I was overwhelmed at first and was going to give up PL but organization, big box, thd dining table, Costco run, simplicity and timing all did it! Am pretty much caught up, too. And you are so right, in the end all PL attendees will be happy and so worth it! Cheers!!

Susan - This is my 3rd PL year, and by far the hardest. Post-it notes have become my best friend. I loved hearing about your process. You will absolutely LOVE the end result and so will your cutie in later years. ;)

christina rayevich - It looks pretty rad!!
your pl stash looks like mine lol, i use the sc journal spots/washi/smash stamp/steppingstone alpha like crazy in there lol.
i didn’t get my pg protectors till feb. so jan for me is just a 2 pg spread, i’ve done weekly since then though. i agree with you on the taking notes etc.. that saves my bum every wk lol =)

Jenny - I agree .. keeping it SIMPLE is key for me too! With 2 litle ones at home there is no other way but I know I will be so glad to have this in years to come. Once I realised that simple looks just as amazing as those that embellish every single thing I’m loving it so much more!

Barb - Can’t believe your album is a bully, too! I thought mine was the only one!

It is really easy for me to get overwhelmed with product and “stuff.” I just have to remind myself to leave room to tell the stories I want to remember.

amy tangerine - this is all awesome. keeping it simple is SO KEY. you rock.

Jennifer - I had to figure out what worked for me too just like you. I have things organized in trays and use post it notes. I also write in my planner different notes to remind me of things I want to say or add to my album. Love what you’ve done so far:)

sasha farina - go you!! just keep at it.. do what you want because you want it.. not anything else!! play play play! and kiss Tyler for me!

Jen Kinkade - first time on a computer in days! love your PL.
your totally inspiring me!!
hugs and prayers for you and Tyler!! <3

Danielle - love your pages!!

kristy.lynn - i’m so happy to see your take on project life! i know the feeling of being bogged down. i just wrapped up week 3. THREE. and we are on week, what??! i didn’t start out with page protectors, and that messed with me. then i kept redoing things i had already done… i kept trying to reinvent the wheel so to speak.

then i sat back, and evaluated what this really was about for me. getting the stories down & the memorabilia into something other than a large crate where i’ll likely never see it again. i too didn’t want a bunch of new supplies, but i shelled out for a few 6×6 paper pads & couldn’t be happier with the price & variety… this from a mostly kraft & white paper lover… who is petrified of patterned paper..

it’s so great to hear i wasn’t the only one that thought ‘just stick it in & your down’, only to find out it became out of hand! i have been saving pictures with dates as names, and using an app called diary on my kindle to keep track of info. at the end of the day (since i read everynight) i put down on the pictures i take & random bits of info.. that way i can’t lose the paper.. so far, it’s working great!!

Paula Pepin - Love this post Tina! This is just what I needed to dive into PL. So inspirational. Hope the little guy in your life is doing well!! Hope to meet up soon :)

Jen - this is my third year, and it’s a struggle this year! something new i have found that has been awesome is an app called Day One. It’s a journaling app that you can add your photos into. I have been taking a screen shot and printing a 3×4. It’s been super super helpful for recalling details and little observations you make through a day. I think it’s $4.99 but worth it. Keep going; looking back on a year in your life in an album is SO WORTH THE EFFORT!!
